The Sound from Down the Hall

The house has its own rhythm in the afternoon. A soft, settled quiet that comes after school bags are dropped and the day’s stories have been shared. I was standing in the kitchen, tea warming my hands, just listening to the hum of the fridge and the clink of the dishwasher I’d just loaded. And then, another sound started to drift in from down the hall.

A muffled, rhythmic tapping. A tiny, electronic cheer. Then a groan, followed by more tapping.

It’s the sound of my son in his room, controller in hand, lost in a world I only barely understand. I peeked in once, and the screen was a vibrant green, filled with little figures running with an almost frantic sense of purpose. He told me it was FIFA, a game where he manages teams and plays in enormous stadiums against people from all over the world. The scale of it feels immense, global, full of rules and statistics and high-stakes pressure.

But from my spot in the hallway, it’s none of those things. It’s just the soundtrack of him. The sound of his focus, the small dramas of a game won or lost playing out in the safety of his own space. It’s a world away from the actual roar of a stadium, from the weight of a real whistle and a real clock.

Here, the only rules that matter are that homework has to be done first, and the volume can’t be quite loud enough to shake the floorboards. The stakes are a moment of frustration, quickly forgotten, or a surge of pride that makes him sit up a little straighter in his chair. It's a reminder that for all the big, official, complicated worlds that exist out there, the ones our children build for themselves, within the quiet walls of home, are just as real, and maybe even more important.

I finished my tea, listening to the gentle thud of his thumb on the controller. A world of competition and victory, all contained in one small room, while the rest of the house just holds the quiet for him. 🧸
